The Broad Los Angeles

The Broad Art Museum

“Mom, we’d really like to go to The Broad Art Museum … can you get us tickets?” Ummm … consider me speechless at that moment, because my kids have only stepped foot in art museums when they have been dragged there. How they even knew about this place was beyond me, but then I got to the bottom of their inspiration ~ Instagram! They had seen several cool photos of postings from The Broad Museum Los Angeles, and finally reached the point where they needed to see it in person for themselves (and be able to take and post their own incredible photos, of course.) You don’t let moments of culture from teenagers pass, so thus began the planning for a day with art!

Art at The Broad

Can you see the lounging Lady in Red? That was not me as I kicked my excursion planning into high gear! (This is a piece on display at The Broad.)

Admission to The Broad is free, however due to its popularity you must get tickets online in advance. They release tickets on the first of every month and end up being nearly sold out that same day. That being said, we had to wait about a month to go by the time we waited for the next first of the month ticket release and found a date outside of school. The museum has a rotating display of art and one thing that we did not know is that one of their exhibits, the Yayoi Kusama Infinity Mirrored Room, requires a separate ticket. This ticket is also free, but can only be reserved upon entrance to the museum and all tickets have usually been claimed within the first 2 hours of its opening. Our museum tickets were for a 1:30 pm entrance, which means we didn’t stand a chance of getting in to see the exhibit. Make sure you book an early morning entrance ticket if you would like see the Mirrored Room!

It became pretty clear, pretty quickly why The Broad appeals to all ages. The art is phenomenally interesting and current!

Life Size Art

Large Scale Youthful Art. We had fun taking our photos in the reflection of these!

For teens, this type of art is much more interesting than paintings in old fancy frames. These wall murals were gorgeous!

Lost in a Sea of Red Waves
This looks almost metallic in the photo but it was actually beautiful fabric hanging in an artistic way.

This is of course, just a tease of what there is to see at The Broad, as I wouldn’t want to spoil the whole thing for you! When you plan your trip there, be sure to research other hot spots in downtown Los Angeles and make a whole day of it.
